Neighborhood Services/Outreach
Council Member Pennington has assisted thousands of constituents regarding delivery of city services and neighborhood issues. He and his staff regularly attend community meetings throughout the district and have worked with city officials on many issues including: 1. Finalization of street and drainage reconstruction in River Oaks. 2. Identified causes, effects, and remedies of flooding in the Gessner IH-10 area, including TIRZ 17, the City of Houston, the Harris County Flood Control District, and the City of Bunker Hill. 3. Renewed negotiations with Spring Branch ISD for the sale of the old Kendall Library to the Independent School District. 4. Addressing the Washington Corridor parking, crime, land use, and general mobility issues. The Traffic & Transportation Department now has a proposal for parking meters, with the proceeds being used in the area to improve conditions.
Budget Council Member Pennington has worked to promote conservative budget practices and eliminate wasteful spending at City Hall. Specifically, he: 1. Voted against increasing water and sewer rates. 2. Emphasized permanent operating budget cuts rather than temporary ones during all fiscal discussions.
Quality of Life Council Member Pennington works with residents of District G to improve and enhance their city services. He supports activities and organizations that promote a sense of community. He is proud to have: 1. Promoted historic preservation, consistent with personal preferences for the utilization of land and the protection of private property rights. 2. Sought citizen input for the pre-planning design stage on the reconstruction of Memorial Drive in West Houston. 3. Organized cleanup teams for the 2011 Trash Bash and for the City of Houston's Walter J. Rasmus Community Park. 4. Provided leadership to implement Operation Westside Success to reduce crime, improve public safety and protect area neighborhoods.
